Statistical investigation of gravity wave characteristics in the ionosphere

Abstract Propagation of medium-scale gravity waves (GWs) in the thermosphere/ionosphere is observed remotely, using multi-frequency and multi-point continuous Doppler sounding system located western part Czechia. Reflection heights radio are determined from a nearby ionosonde. Phase velocity vectors GWs calculated time/phase delays between signals corresponding to different transmitter–receiver pairs that reflect ionosphere at locations. As various frequencies heights, reflection points separated both horizontally vertically, investigation GW propagation performed three dimensions. Results obtained for two 1-year periods representing solar maximum (July 2014–June 2015) current minimum (September 2018–August 2019) presented. It shown usually propagated with wave directed obliquely downward. A statistical distribution vector elevation angles model neutral winds used estimate characteristics wind-rest frame. found narrower frame than Earth Seasonal diurnal changes directions attenuations discussed. The wavelengths analyzed were ~ 80 300 km, velocities mostly 100 220 m/s.
